5th song of the 20/20 project…

This week I’ve done a couple of things differently for you.

1. Instead of recording an MP3 I have uploaded a video of this week’s song from my ’secret lab’ and…

2. Instead of doing a complete originalĀ I have… well you’ll have to watch the video to find out!

As ever leave me a comment here on the blog or drop me a line to let me know what works and what doesn’t.

Andy, this is one of my all-time favourite hymns. The melody works well for it, but I think perhaps you could have given your own lyrics, thus making it completely your own. I also think a ‘bridge’ somewhere may be good. The video is a really good idea, and I look forward to more if possible. God bless you Andy.

    Hi Andy

As always, thank you for sharing the music that is springing forth. I really think this is neat.
The words to “When I Survey” are so good, however, with the tune being so familiar, it is easy for people (us) to stop thinking about the meaning. Sometimes, just having a fresh tune injects some new life. Your tune does that. Thank you.
As a local leader of worship here in Ontario, Canada, I have often thought that I’d love to hear a fresh tune for “A Mighty Fortress”, as well. The words to many old hymns are inspired & so theologically sound but yet grate against the sensibilities of today’s people.
Thanks for doing this with When I Survey”.

Hi Andy! What a great idea to do a video! It was great to see you as well as hear you. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross is one of my favorite hymns as well. While I like the new melody, I have to say I perfer the original melody of the hymn. I’d like to hear you write your own words to the melody, because as I stated earlier I like the melody, just not with the hymn. You’re doing a great job! Keep on praising!

I love hymns and this one is great. I like rewritten ones as well. I think you should be able to get a chorus as well as a rewrite. I think it adds so much. I like how you did it though and maybe more of these may be in your future. Ben

    Hi Andy

Always enjoyed playing this song with you in engage! Really enjoy the melody and thinks it works with the words. It would be an idea to explore writing your own bridge/tag for it (chorus might lengthen song too much? maybe not). but good work.

I agree with toadie, loking good AND sounding good!

A face with the music finally. I like this one and that is coming from a non hymnal kinda person. Grew up with Jewish and french music…
    Its really strong…love the words!

    Thanks for sharing,

We’ve sung this in church many times I think I’m too familiar with it to be objective, but I like it!

I’m never entirely convinced about new versions of old hymns but this has a very different tempo to the other two more familiar versions - almost upbeat. I think that’s fine, the lyrics are about pain and death and taking on the sins of the world, but also about celebration of salvation.

Again, I would like to hear what you could do musically on this, a bit of woodwind maybe? A flute? Or strings? If you do record it for an album, I would like you to go as far outside the box as possible, so that, especially in light of the above comments, you take people away from their usual associations of the song into a completely new place.

I think this one needed its own lyrics!
    Love the tune though
